Horizontal panorama of Zion National Park, Utah. It was photographed as five vertical images to include the arch of the Milky Way. f/1.8, 20 seconds, ISO 2500 with EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens, Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

Wide-angle lenses tend to bend straight lines, such as horizons, or make parallel lines, such as trees, converge. Panorama software can turn a panorama constructed from wide-angle shots into hash. Use 24mm focal length (35mm is better) or higher to avoid wide-angle distortions. For the highest resolution, shoot verticals for a horizontal image (and horizontals for a vertical image).

If you shoot in RAW format, make sure you apply identical settings to each of your images in the RAW editor. Most photo editors have provisions for applying the same settings from the previous image to the next or to batch-edit a group of pictures. Turn off auto correction and auto white balance.

The major editing programs all offer tools for creating panoramas, and a number of plug-ins exist to automate the process. As usual, Photoshop provides several methods for stitching pictures together, one of which is Photomerge. See “Photomerge for Panoramas” in chapter 11.
